Personal Prevention - Cleaning Dentures and Other Appliances
Dentures and partial dentures should be rinsed thoroughly after each meal to remove food particles. A clean mouth is less prone to dental disease and a clean denture is more easily tolerated.
Dentures should be removed from the mouth before bedtime and brushed thoroughly. Brush the denture over a sink filled with water to prevent breakage if the denture is accidentally dropped.
A toothbrush will remove plaque and food particles effectively from dentures, natural teeth and the soft lining of the mouth.
The gums under the denture should be massaged daily with a soft toothbrush.
A soft toothbrush, denture brush, or a new nailbrush can be used with liquid soap and warm water to brush all surfaces of the denture. Avoid abrasive cleansers that may roughen the polished pink plastic.
Store dentures in a glass or container of water. A small amount of mouthrinse inhibits the growth of bacteria and provides a fresh taste.
Usually it is better not to wear dentures when sleeping. However some people prefer to wear their dentures day and night. If this is the case, considerable care is needed to ensure that the dentures and the mouth are kept very clean to prevent decay hidden by the denture from destroying the teeth that support the denture.
